British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
