Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
